Reconnect with Nature: Simple Ways to Celebrate Earth Day and Boost Your Well-Being

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. In addition to its mission to promote environmental protection and sustainability, it serves as a powerful reminder of how nature can greatly impact our well-being.

Studies suggest that spending time outdoors or even bringing nature inside – such as having indoor plants or playing ocean waves – can improve overall well-being. Studies suggest that spending time in nature:

  • has cognitive benefits like improving memory and concentration
  • lowers stress levels and mental distress
  • increases happiness, positive social interactions, and sense of meaning/purpose in life

Not sure where to start? Check out the ideas below for some simple and fun ways to reconnect with nature and make the most of Earth Day (and every day!):

  • Visit a Local Park: Parks are great ways to spend some time in nature! They typically provide a safe and free place to spend time outdoors whether you’re planning to relax, read, meditate, or have a picnic.
  • Get Active! A great way to connect with nature is to get active! Walk around your neighborhood, find a nearby hike, or go on a bike ride.
  • Start a Garden: If you have a backyard or balcony, consider starting a garden. It’s an incredibly rewarding way to bring nature into your life and cultivate a green thumb.
  • Visit Blue Spaces: It’s not just about green spaces! If you’re able to, visit a nearby body of water such as a lake, river, or ocean. Depending on your interests and the weather, you could go swimming, kayaking, or simply enjoy the peaceful sound of water.
  • Take Your Workout Outside! Whether it’s a workout your trainer assigned to you in the Workout Builder or a Les Mills class in your Motivation Alliance portal, you can easily go outside and follow along on your app!
  • Volunteer for a Local Cleanup Event: : Earth Day is the perfect time to give back to the environment and make a difference in your own neighborhood. It’s a great way to get your steps in and give back in the process!
