Tips for a Happy & Healthy Halloween

The leaves are changing color and the weather can finally be described as “crisp,” which means Halloween is around the corner! Whether you prefer to stay in for a spooky night with friends or have little ones you plan to take trick-or-treating, you can enjoy the holiday without sacrificing fun or health.

Trick-or-Treating

  • Safety first! Make sure you and your group can be seen in the dark. Wear reflectors and bring flashlights or glowsticks. If possible, stay on the sidewalks while going door to door. It’s also important to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately for the temperature.
  • Don’t forget to bring water so everyone stays hydrated!
  • Your kids will likely want to eat their treats no matter what, but having a healthy meal before trick-or-treating can reduce the temptation to fill up on candy.
  • Inspect candy before children eat them. Be sure to check the expiration dates and ingredients, especially if there are any food allergies

Halloween Parties

  • Whether you’re hosting or attending a festive party, consider bringing a healthy dish! Some ideas include a salad, vegetable tray, or a fruit platter. You can also try out a healthier version of your favorite dessert or appetizer. Need some inspiration? Check out the recipe library in your Motivation Alliance portal!
  • Don’t deprive yourself! It’s perfectly okay to enjoy some treats – the key is to do so in moderation. It’s also beneficial to eat mindfully so you can really enjoy each bite and more easily recognize when you’re full so you don’t overindulge.
  • Eat a balanced meal before arriving at a party or gathering. This way, you won’t show up starving and can decide what you truly want to indulge in without snacking mindlessly.

Staying Home

  • If staying home and watching scary movies is more up your alley, you’re in for a nice and cozy night! Try to get up and walk around once an hour (or at least in between each movie!) to get some movement in. It’s also easy to snack a lot while watching TV, so opt for healthy movie treats like air-popped popcorn or dark chocolate.
  • Whether you’re putting out a bowl for trick-or-treaters or answering the door each time it rings, consider some healthy (but still kid-friendly!) options:
    • Pretzels
    • Fruit leathers
    • Popcorn
    • Snack-sized packages of dried fruit
    • Consider non-edible options like glow sticks, bouncy balls, temporary tattoos, bubbles, and stickers!
